NMSU Jazz Jumpstart - LasCruces.com

Are you a Jazz aficionado? Is there just something about professionally executed Jazz music that not only stirs your soul, but changes the way you view the world? Then hold on to your brass tacks, because the NMSU Jazz Jumpstart is back, and with it are world renowned musicians and guest clinicians from around the region, all convening to educate our youth and perform for you. The NMSU Jazz Jumpstart takes place at Atkinson Recital Hall, November 10 – 11, 2022.

Going strong now for over half a century, this year marks the 54th anniversary of the annual music event, which brings together some of the brightest lights in the Jazz arena to educate aspiring youth and inspire audiences. In addition to providing workshops and clinics on all things Jazz for 13 area schools, the event also includes music and lots of it. This year, the organizers will be premiering five new big band arrangements, and a combo set featuring the guest artists, all over two big days.

Guests this year include Terell Stafford – Laura H. Carnell Professor of Music, director of Jazz studies, and chair of instrumental studies for Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance – and London-based Jazz pianist Raffy Bushman. Joining them in this prestigious educational event are El Paso double bassist Christian Chesanek, Las Cruces drummer Brian Wright, and tenor saxophonist Josh Carter. All will be giving masterclasses for middle- and high-school bands from throughout the region, as well as performing.
