Best New Mexico Cabins for a Great Getaway | LasCruces.com

Want to get away from it all? Book a stay at one of New Mexico’s cozy cabins. From southern Cloudcroft to northern Red River, there are plenty of places to hide away among streams, mountains, and picturesque views.

Here are six unique cabin rental properties, perfect for couples, small groups, or solo travelers. All cabins listed follow state health guidelines and COVID-19 safety protocols, such as regularly disinfecting surfaces and, in some cases, contactless check-ins. Many are NM Safe certified through New Mexico’s COVID-Safe Training Program.

The Cabins at Cloudcroft

The Cabins at Cloudcroft offers a rustic cabin experience in the Sacramento Mountains in Lincoln National Forest. Visitors can choose from 15 different cabins maintained since the 1950s and ‘60s.

Cloudcroft is the southern-most ski area in New Mexico (see page 12 for more about skiing New Mexico). Cabin guests can easily explore the many trails of Lincoln National Forest, go hunting and fishing where permitted, and stroll the village shops and restaurants, as COVID-19 restrictions allow.

“We’re located at 9,000 feet above stress level,” said Karl Campbell, president of Trestle Properties Inc., quoting the Cloudcroft slogan.

Each cabin has all the necessary kitchen amenities, including utensils, dishes, and cookware. They also have towels, washcloths, linens, pillows, paper towels, dishwashing liquid, wood for one fire, and a TV. Other than a small bar of soap and bottle of shampoo, toiletries are not provided.

Georgetown Cabins Resort

Surrounded by the Gila National Forest and forever views of the Black Range, Georgetown Cabins Resort is the perfect retreat for couples.
“A lot of people come here for birthdays, anniversaries — just special getaways to spend time with their loved one,” said owner Susie Eickhoff. “We overlook what used to be a townsite of Georgetown back in the late 1800s, so we have a lot of history where we’re located.”

Situated near Silver City, the property includes six upscale, modern cabins. Amenities include a fully equipped kitchen, linens and towels, a gas fire pit, a private patio with a gas grill, DVD player, satellite TV, and all the comforts of home.

Many visitors choose to spend their time in and around their cabins. However, activities range from hiking and fishing to picnicking and birdwatching.

The property features a children’s playground, picnic areas, and barbecue grills. Guests can choose from nine log-style cabins which are fully furnished and include a TV, fireplace, bedding, towels, and a full kitchen with updated appliances.

Surrounded by Lincoln National Forest, guests can easily venture out onto one of the many trails open for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Visitors can also check out Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort & Casino and Ski Apache, as COVID restrictions allow.

Pecos River Cabins

The Pecos River Cabins sits on three acres of land in Pecos, New Mexico. And each cabin has a deck or patio that faces the Pecos River.

“We’re located very close to Pecos Canyon, which takes you up into Pecos Wilderness, and so there’s hiking, as well as fishing and birding,” said Kimberly Allen, whose family owns the property. “People also come to the cabins to do plein air painting, photography, hiking, snowshoeing.”

Pecos River Cabins offers both rustic and modern options. All cabins include electricity, fully functional kitchens with cookware, bed linens, and bath towels. However, the three rustic cabins, built in the 1920s, do not have plumbing and are only open during the warm months. Hot showers, commodes, and sinks are located in a bath house onsite.

The four modern cabins have heat and plumbing and are open year-round.
