The Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery (MVFAG) announces exhibits for the month of April 2022, from oil painter Linda Hagen and stained-glass artist Hetty Smith. In business for over 20 years, MVFAG is a cooperative gallery giving voice to artists from Southern New Mexico and West Texas. Both Linda and Hetty are transplants-turned-local artists working in a Southwestern style reflective of the area.
Linda Hagen, who paints in oils, moved to Las Cruces from Ohio in 2004. She instantly connected to the light and landscape of New Mexico. She paints in her studio as well as plein air, a French expression which refers to the act of painting outdoors. She enjoys the challenges of painting light, depth and color, especially at the Mesilla Valley farmland she calls home. Her love of nature and animals is reflected in her work, but she holds a special regard for the horse.
Hetty Smith’s love for stained glass started a long time ago while growing up in Holland. Beautiful homes, apartments and churches in Europe were decorated with unique stained glass in the windows, which inspired her creativity. She attended classes at Dona Ana College, a branch of NMSU, and this is how she developed her passion. She also used her knowledge as a dressmaker to design and color her selections.
In addition, the gallery offers art in many different mediums, including acrylic, pastel and watercolor painting, drawing, photography, jewelry, ceramics, fiber art, basketry, wood turning, gourds, and much more. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery is located at 2470-A Calle de Guadalupe in Mesilla, across from the Fountain Theatre. The exhibit runs April 1 – 30, 2022. daily. For more information, visit the website, or call 575-522-2933.
