Las Cruces International Airport welcomes the high-flying Wings n Wheels ‘Fest 21, Saturday, September 25, 2021, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Join aviators from around the nation to celebrate American aviation and aerospace in Las Cruces! On display will be a wide variety of airplanes, helicopters and other aircraft, along with vintage and classic cars and hotrods. There will be dozens of aircraft and aerospace exhibitors, family-friendly activities, and food trucks too!
A highlight of this event is the appearance of the B-25J Mitchell “Maid in the Shade” bomber and her pilots and crew. Built in early 1944, she is very rare – one of only 34 B-25Js still flying – and was used in America’s first large-scale bombing offensive in the Philippines, where she sunk 8 ships and shot down 5 airplanes. Tours and rides on this classic warbird are available for purchase at the website, or at the event.
Children and teens ages 8-18 can sign up to experience their first flight with Young Eagles pilots. The Wings n Wheels ‘Fest 2021 is a fundraiser for EAA’s local Chapter-555 Youth Aviation Scholarship program, benefitting young people in the Mesilla Valley and surrounding area. Chapter 555, “the Triple Nickel,” is a 501-c3 non-profit whose mission is to introduce young people to exciting aviation opportunities. The Chapter has given first flights to over 3,700 young people in southern New Mexico.
This aviation event is free and open to the public. The airport is only 10 minutes from downtown, take I-10 west to Exit 132, and turn right toward the yellow water tower. For more information, visit the Facebook page, or call 575-640-0312.
