The third annual Great New Mexico Chile Taste-Off returns to the Socorro Rodeo and Sports Complex on Saturday, September 18, 2021. The event is sponsored by the New Mexico Chile Association (NMCA), Bueno Foods, Socorro County and the City of Socorro, and is NMCA’s effort to raise awareness of the New Mexico Certified Chile program. Admission is free! Come taste red and green chile from all around New Mexico and even take some home. Be there when the best green and red chile growers in New Mexico are announced!
“We’re excited to bring back The Great New Mexico Chile Taste-Off as an in-person event for the whole family,” said Joram Robbs, Executive Director, New Mexico Chile Association. “The event will provide a great way for New Mexico residents to find their favorite chile, as well as support our local industry. If you love New Mexico chile, this is the place for you!”
The event will feature live music, dancing, food and drinks, local vendors, performances, fireworks and more. The fun begins with a parade at 2 p.m., that starts at Sedillo Park and travels down California street, ending at the Socorro Rodeo and Sports Complex. Gates open at 3 p.m., with opening ceremonies kicking off at 3:30 p.m. The judged Taste-Off runs from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m., with winners announced at 6:30 p.m. The “roasting” of the giant paper-mâché chile takes place at 7 p.m., followed by a red and green fireworks display, at 7:30 p.m.
Chile growers from Hatch, Las Cruces, Deming, Chimayó, Corrales, Lemitar, Arrey, Salem, Garfield, Farmington, Peña Blanca, Tucumcari and more will be represented. Judges for this year’s event are State Senator George Muñoz, actor and stuntman Forrie Smith (Yellowstone), and Deputy Director Anthony Parra from New Mexico Department of Agriculture.
