The popularity of the Sonoma Ranch neighborhood on the east side of Las Cruces is thanks in part to spectacular views of the city, sunsets, and mountains as well as proximity to good schools, stores, gyms, and medical services. Of course, the quality and diversity of housing options make this area attractive, too.
In general, the Sonoma Ranch area lies on both sides of Sonoma Ranch Boulevard, east of Roadrunner Boulevard and west of the Organ Mountains, and south of Highway 70. There are several Sonoma Ranch developments, each with its own HOA, as well as neighboring developments outside the boundaries.
Housing in Sonoma Ranch
Not long ago this area was desert land, but over the last two decades, growth has exploded. In Sonoma Ranch, you can find large custom homes, gated 55+ communities, attractive neighborhoods, duplexes, condos, and even apartment communities.
Some homes have dramatic views of the Organ Mountains further to the east while others can look over the sunsets and city lights to the west. A few homes even have rooftop viewing areas that allow them to take in both views! Golf lovers will want to consider snagging one of the homes bordering the golf course.
You’ll find homes with built-in pools and outdoor fireplaces to help you enjoy your yard in any season. Most yards in this area are xeriscaped to conserve water, but if you really want a lawn, you can find homes that feature them or you can have one added.
Schools in Sonoma Ranch
Of course, parents want to consider school when picking a neighborhood. This desirable neighborhood is served by two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school on the far south end of Sonoma Ranch Boulevard. Students who want an academic challenge can apply to attend the Las Cruces Public School District’s Arrowhead Park Early College High School.
In addition, the East Mesa Campus of Doña Ana Community College is located just off Sonoma Ranch Boulevard, offering education opportunities at a two-year campus. Las Cruces is also home to a four-year college, New Mexico State University, just a few miles away.
Shopping, Dining, and Medical Services
Many businesses in Las Cruces are located in or near the neighborhood, from name-brand big-box stores to locally owned shops. Grocery stores are easily available in multiple locations, as are gas stations.
Both fast-food and sit-down restaurants have their home in Sonoma Ranch. You can find gyms, hair salons, day care centers, a hospital, medical offices, and many other services conveniently located within or near Sonoma Ranch.
A local independent pharmacy that has been recognized as the best in Las Cruces is moving to Sonoma Ranch in early 2024. Mesilla Valley Pharmacy’s relocation from downtown will feature a sterile-compounding lab and expanded services. They offer custom medication solutions alongside everything else found in typical corporate pharmacies.
Parks, Trails, and Golf in Sonoma Ranch
If you enjoy walking or cycling to stay healthy, Sonoma Ranch is a great place to live. The Desert Trails Community Park is located between Mission Boulevard and Sonora Springs on the west side of Sonoma Ranch and offers miles of connecting walking trails. Sonoma Ranch Boulevard itself offers both a sidewalk and a multi-use path from Lohman on the south practically to Highway 70 on the north. You can also easily access the Triviz multi-use trail not far from Sonoma Ranch.
Plenty of city parks are in or near Sonoma Ranch as well. Sam Graft Park is on Sedona Hills Boulevard east of Sonoma Ranch Boulevard. It has lots of green space, a playground, basketball court, covered picnic tables and barbecues.
Visit nearby Veterans Memorial Park on Roadrunner Boulevard to honor veterans from many wars as well as to let the kids play on the play structure and soccer field. A disc golf course is also nearing completion in the desert just west of the soccer field.
If the usual type of golf is more your style, Sonoma Ranch has that, too! A city pool is north of Sonoma Ranch, easily accessed off Highway 70.
All in all, Sonoma Ranch is a great place to live, whether as a home to raise a family or a spot to retire and enjoy all that life in Las Cruces has to offer.
