It’s Christmas all year long at Tis the Season in Mesilla. Laura Romero opened the store in a century-old, Victorian home on Avenida de Mesilla. She says many of her customers come in to see the iconic house first hand and end up staying for the unique array of holiday décor items displayed throughout the home on antique furniture.
From Santas and nutcrackers to mugs, stockings, and ornaments, Laura says she stocks up on decorations you’re not likely to find anywhere else in town. Some of her biggest sellers are collectibles from Department 56 (the company behind the popular Snowbabies figurine line), Karen Didion Originals, and Jim Shore. She also sells consignment pieces from local artists.
One room of the store is dedicated to a lighted holiday village display, something Laura’s been doing for 25 years. “The village is
second nature to me so I love sharing ideas with customers,” she says. “To make your village authentic, I recommend adding to it with things from your yard like rocks and wood.”
While Christmas prevails at Tis the Season, Laura does change one room seasonally offering up Halloween and Thanksgiving décor in the fall, Easter and Mother’s Day items in the spring, and Fourth of July and Father’s Day pieces in the summer. The shop is worth a stop in any time of the year, but of course there’s no better way to get into the holiday spirit than by perusing the beautiful Christmas displays for a new treasure.
