Competitors in the Annual Senior Olympics Summer Games,

Calling all seniors with a zest for life and a competitive spirit! It’s Senior Olympics time again, and registration is underway to make this year’s event the best it can possibly be. The Annual Senior Olympics State Summer Games are happening this year in Las Cruces, with an anticipated 400 – 600 active older adults 50+ competing in 27 individual sporting events. The Senior Olympics will take place at multiple sport venues throughout the City of Las Cruces and New Mexico State University, June 7 – 11, 2023.

“As the mission of the New Mexico Senior Olympics Organization is to highlight active aging and senior sports, we want to allow everyone 50+ the opportunity to still register for the ’23 State Summer Games,” said Executive Director Cecilia Acosta.

Pre-pandemic the annual Senior Olympics attracted 1,100+ senior participants 50+ each year. Participation is between senior athletes of all skill levels. 2022 marked the return to the event, with an estimated 600 seniors registered to participate. The organizers are hoping to return to pre-pandemic numbers with this year’s event. The Annual Senior Olympics State Summer Games have something for everyone. But the time to register is NOW.

What Does It Take to Compete?

Seniors compete in five-year age divisions, starting at 50 – 54, 55 – 59, 60 – 64, 65 – 69 and so forth to 95 – 99 and beyond. There’s no such thing as too old to participate. In November 2021, Julia “Hurricane” Hawkins became the oldest person to compete in the Louisiana Senior Olympics, at the ripe young age of 105.  She became the first female track and field athlete and first American to set a world record in the 100-meter dash for her age group. But she wasn’t the first centenarian to take the field, and it’s doubtful she’ll be the last. The next could be you!

There will be 27 individual sporting events at this year’s Annual Senior Olympics State Summer Games. They offer a wide array of choices, including Air Gun, Archery, Badminton, Basketball Free-throw, 3 Point Shot, Billiards, Track & Field, Golf, Horseshoes, Pickleball, Powerwalk, Shuffleboard, Dance and Talent, Swimming, and so much more. The latest sport added to the lineup this year is Cornhole. Spectators are encouraged to attend the events and cheer on the participants.

Now in its 43rd year, the Annual Senior Olympics State Summer Games are funded in part by the NM Department of Aging and Long-Term Services. New Mexico Summer Olympics (NMSO) is a private, non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles for all seniors aged 50 years and older through education, fitness, and sporting events. NMSO is headquartered in Roswell, New Mexico. Every other year, the Annual Senior Olympics State Summer Games qualify New Mexico seniors for the National Seniors Games. The 2024 and 2025 Summer Olympics will also be held in Las Cruces.
