Road Trip: NAMIWalks 2023 - LasCruces.com
NAMIWalk Santa Fe

May is Mental Health Month and the Santa Fe chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) invites you to help raise awareness with NAMIWalks 2023. With an estimated 1 in 5 adults now living with mental health issues, NAMI – The nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization – works tirelessly to build better lives for those affected. Now you can get involved, too, by joining in and becoming a part of NAMIWalks 2023 at Alto/Bicentennial Park (right behind Bicentennial Pool) in Santa Fe, on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 8:30 a.m.

It’s been a tough few years, but now is a good time to pause and reflect on the good things. Mental Health Awareness Month shines a light on a difficult truth: Nearly one in five Americans lives with a mental health condition, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. These conditions take on many forms, including depression, anxiety, mood and personality disorders, eating disorders, and even substance abuse. The one thing it is important to remember is, you are not alone. Take the time to focus on healing, reaching out and connecting.

NAMI believes it’s not how far we walk, it’s how far we have come. The rallying call, “Mental Health for All,” is meant to knock down walls, topple obstacles, and realize dreams. How? By piercing the solitude with the spirit of inclusion. During NAMIWalks, so many stories are shared and traditions started. Differences are made during these festive gatherings filled with smiles, celebrations, and meaningful moments.

Getting Involved

To take part in this life-affirming event you can join an existing team or start your own, by making a meaningful donation. On May 20, join your friends and family on the road to recognition and recovery. Achieving mental health for all is an ongoing process, but every little bit helps. Your involvement not only shows support for the cause, but also gives you the opportunity to form friendships and build a support network for those in need.

Dogs are welcome on walk day, so long as they are on a leash. Designated doggy areas for rest and relaxation will be provided along the path for your furry friends. Dog clean-up bags will be available so that you can keep the walk route tidy.

What is NAMI?

What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979, has blossomed into the nation’s leading voice on mental health. Today NAMI is an alliance of more than 600 local affiliates who work within communities to raise awareness and provide support to those in need. NAMI fights stigma, provides support, educates the public and advocates for policies that support the millions of people in the U.S. affected by mental illness.

This year, NAMI is celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month with the More Than Enough campaign. It’s an opportunity for all of us to come together and remember the inherent value we each hold — no matter our diagnosis, appearance, socioeconomic status, background or ability. NAMI wants every person out there to know that if all you did was wake up today, that’s more than enough. No matter what, you are inherently worthy of more than enough life, love and healing. Showing up, just as you are, for yourself and the people around you is more than enough. Join the campaign and get involved today.
