For the first time ever, all four public high schools in Las Cruces are participating in the Enchantment Awards, also known as the New Mexico High School Musical Theatre Awards. Each is eligible for top prizes in the statewide competition, having produced a musical at their school.
More than 35 students are also competing for top awards, including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. Those chosen Best Actor and Best Actress go on the National High School Musical Theatre Awards — the Jimmy Awards — where they work with Broadway professionals and perform on a Broadway stage with dozens of their peers from across the country. They can also win one of 20 scholarships at the Jimmy Awards. Three New Mexico students have won a total of $9,000 in scholarships at the national level.
The four participating schools are:
Organ Mountain High School with Rock of Ages High School Edition (September) and A Chorus Line Teen Edition (April);
Las Cruces High School with The Addams Family (November);
Mayfield High School with Matilda, Jr. (February); and
Centennial High School with The Wizard of Oz (April).
Finalists for the Enchantment Awards will be announced April 12. Funding for the Enchantment Awards has been provided by the Devasthali Foundation, through the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico, to help defray expenses related to participation by Las Cruces schools.
