Think you know your art? The Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery wants to challenge your art knowledge with a month-long exhibit and game called My Masterpiece. Match clues to the artwork on display and win a prize. What’s the catch? The exhibit features original homages by local artists to the works of world-renowned artists. Your job is to figure it out, and by doing so, win a prize! My Masterpiece is part of Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery’s spring event, taking place May 3 – 31, 2023.
For over 20 years now, the gallery has been holding its annual spring event, featuring the game in which more than 20 gallery members create a piece of art inspired by a famous artist. Each of the art pieces is associated with a clue. All you have to do is visit the gallery, follow the clues, and see if you can figure out who the objects of the tributes may be. By doing so, you could walk away with a $250 gift certificate and bragging rights as one of the Mesilla Valley’s most knowledgeable arts aficionados. In the event of a tie, the winner will be chosen by a drawing. Either way, the winner will be announced on Thursday, June 1.
A Gallery for the People
An event on May 27 will bring art to the local community and allow visitors to interact with the artists and take part in demonstrations. Gallery artist and art professor at El Paso Community College Frank Rimbach will offer free art lessons in the use of charcoal, Sharpie markers, and oil pastels, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. These lessons will be taught on the shaded patio behind the gallery, where Frank will help you create your own “masterpiece” inspired by a photograph of a famous artist’s work. Art supplies and light refreshments will be provided. Arrive early as seating is limited.
The Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery is a 30-member co-op of local artists. It showcases a diverse selection of art including paintings, photography, pottery, wood turnings, jewelry, gourd art, ceramics, stained glass, prints and notecards — something for every taste and budget. The gallery has been in business for 28 years, incorporated in 1994, and is believed to be the longest operating co-op art gallery in New Mexico.
The gallery is located across from the Fountain Theater at 2470A Calle de Guadalupe, one block south of the plaza in Mesilla. Hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., seven days a week. The gallery is closed only on Thanksgiving and Christmas days and one day every three months for art rotation and presentation of new art.
The My Masterpiece game has been a popular annual winter or spring event at the gallery for the past 20 years. It was discontinued during the past two years because of COVID. Threat from this disease has diminished and the gallery is once again bringing the game to the community.
