In 1977, the movie Star Wars premiered, and a pop culture zeitgeist was born. Now, 46 years later, the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library declares Happy Star Wars Week with May the Fourth be With You. What started out as an informal commemoration of the movie has become a week-long celebration of all things Star Wars, from A New Hope to The Mandalorian, and beyond. To that end, the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library will celebrate May the Fourth be With You with a full slate of activities throughout the week of Tuesday, May 2 to Friday, May 5, 2023.
The fun begins at 6 p.m. on May 2, in the Roadrunner Room at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library. Everybody’s got a favorite costume squirreled away somewhere that was inspired by the movies and television shows populating the Star Wars universe. Now’s the time to dig it out and brush off the space dust, so you can show it off at the Star Wars Costume Contest. Participants 14-years-old and younger will be considered for the children’s contest, while those who are 15 years-old and older will be considered for the adult contest. Prizes will be awarded to both children and adults.
Then, on May 4, beginning at 6 p.m., a Team Trivia Contest will be held in the Roadrunner Room. Win more prizes by testing your Jedi skills and showing off your knowledge of the Lucasfilm and Disney franchise. What was Luke’s father’s job, according to his uncle Owen? How big was the first Death Star? Who knows, you may even find out if Han fired first! Up to five people can compete as a team for this event, but solos are also welcome. Space is limited for this one, so you’ll have to register as soon as possible. To do that visit the website and fill out the provided form. As with most things happening at the library, it’s free!
The fun continues on May 5, when the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library presents a screening of the first film in the series, in the Roadrunner Room. Tag along with Luke, Leia, Obi-Wan, Han and the droids as they race against time to destroy the massive Death Star before it can be unleashed on the universe. Relive all of your favorite scenes like never before through this interactive screening, providing prompts to liven up your viewing pleasure. Young and old alike will enjoy this communal screening of a bonafide classic!
Make plans now to attend any or all of the events for May the Fourth be With You week at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library. Light refreshments will be provided while they last for each of these events. Also on hand will be a photo booth, so you can take pictures with your favorite characters. There’s even word that the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader himself, may make a special visit.
