Las Cruces is one of over 100 U.S. cities celebrating International Make Music Day on Monday, June 21, 2021. Completely different from a traditional music festival, Make Music Day celebrates and promotes the natural music maker in all of us, regardless of age, ethnicity, background, or skill level. Make Music Day is a free and open invitation for everyone to make, enjoy, perform, teach, learn, and experience the joy of making music on the longest day of the year.
Held annually, Make Music Day is part of the international Fête de la Musique, taking place in 1,000 cities across 120 countries. It is presented by the NAMM Foundation and coordinated by the nonprofit Make Music Alliance. To celebrate here in Las Cruces, local organizations are hosting free live concerts throughout the city that will feature local musicians, music demonstrations, and music-themed giveaways.
Performances will kick off at Klein Park, 155 Mesquite St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Plaza de Las Cruces, downtown, will host a showcase of local bands on the main stage from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Included in that line-up will be Nicole Osborn (6:30 p.m.), Dallas David Ochoa (6:55 p.m.), Cosmic Unknown (7:20 p.m.), Papayas Con Chile (8 p.m.) and Unlyshed (8:30 p.m.).
In addition to the two downtown venues, there will also be live performances at Hubbard’s Music-N-More, 108 Wyatt Dr., which will host bands on its stage in front of the store from 2 to 6 p.m. Get updated information at their website.
Starting at 6 p.m., the Las Cruces Ukes, a local ukulele club, will teach participants a few two-chord songs on loaned ukuleles and then perform a sing-along concert at Good Samaritan Society — Las Cruces Village, 3011 Buena Vida Circle in the Social Center.
