The Traditional Spanish Market in Santa Fe provides the perfect excuse to escape the summer heat in Las Cruces and head to a somewhat cooler climate. The free 72nd Traditional Spanish Market, hosted by the Atrisco Heritage Foundation, will fill the historic Santa Fe Plaza with more than 125 artists and craftspeople on July 27 and 28, 2024.
These artists use centuries-old techniques and materials to honor the Spanish colonists who had to make do with what was available to create household and religious essentials, clothing, and decorative items. For example, canvases were rarely available, so painters would create artwork on the tanned hides of cattle. There were no fields of flowers from which to gather a bouquet for the church altar, so permanent flowers were crafted from wood, or even silver for richer parishes.
If you’re traveling from Las Cruces to attend the market, make your hotel reservations early because this event draws collectors from across the country and beyond our borders.
While you’re at the market, you can also enjoy entertainment performed by regional Hispanic bands and dance groups and try delicious food offered at booths. There will also be artist demonstrations and other activities.
