Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From the reading of the General Order Number 3, by General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, the observance of that date as Emancipation Day became a tradition commemorating African American freedom and emphasizing education and achievement. One hundred and fifty-six years later, the celebration continues!
