No Strings Theatre Company presents the off-Broadway hit Every Brilliant Thing at the Black Box Theatre, June 11 – 27, 2021. Written by playwright Duncan Macmillan and comedian Jonny Donahoe, the “one-person” play spans three decades and several life-changing events in the character’s life. Catch it Fridays, June 11, 18, and 25, at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, June 12, 19, and 26, at 8 p.m.; Sundays, June 20 and 27, at 2:30 p.m.; and Thursday, June 17 at 7 p.m. There are only 33 seats per performance, so reserve tickets early!
Playwright and actress Autumn Gieb takes center stage as the main character, who is nameless and evolves through various stages of her life: child, teenager, college student, and adult. She begins by creating a list of “brilliant things” to make her depressed mother happy. Things like ice cream, Kung Fu movies, and laughing so hard you shoot milk out your nose. Over time, the list begins to take on a life of its own. Striking a delicate balance between sobering loss and cathartic laughter, it recounts a life lived in the shadow of depression.
“It’s surprisingly not that heavy,” Autumn says. “Yes, it deals with serious topics, but it talks about them frankly and honestly. As my character, writing this list, I myself have found it to be an exercise in gratitude. To see the positive and realize the world isn’t this dark horrible place all the time. I’ve had some dark times in my life, some of them recently, things I thought I wouldn’t pull myself out of. But I can see hope now, and I think that is one of the shining themes of this play. There are brilliant things that make life worth living.”
