Spend a weekend communing with nature, as Elephant Butte Lake State Park hosts its annual Kayak Fishing Tournament, May 21-23, 2021. The catch-photo-release tournament is open to any angler in any kind of watercraft, just so long as it isn’t gas-powered. That’s right, if you’ve got a canoe, kayak, rowboat, paddleboard or any other manually operated boat, along with an old fashioned fishing rod, this is the adventure for you! Check-in is required at 7 p.m. Friday, May 21. Starting time will be 6 a.m., Saturday, May 22, and the tournament will end at precisely 3:30 p.m. Ten cash prize winners, plus the coveted Big Fish competition payout (determined by number of competitors), will be announced at 11 a.m., on Sunday, May 23.
Participants will be marked with a black Sharpie on their “fish holding” hand and use their own SmartPhone cameras to document the overall length of each fish caught. Every effort must then be made to release the fish alive after catching and photographing. The photos will then be uploaded via the iAngler app. Tournament rules and entry forms are available via the Zia Kayak Outfitters website. Minors are eligible with a parent or legal guardian signature on the entry form. All participants must have a valid New Mexico Fishing License and adhere to all New Mexico Department of Game and Fish rules.
