What better time to acquire a home with a gym and pool than during the new year when we make fitness goals? Add COVID restrictions that can make visiting our local gym difficult or impossible, and it seems now is the time to investigate having an exercise space of your own.
The home we’re touring in this issue offers all this and so much more. The owners had it custom built, ensuring every element they desired in a new home would be there. Gym for basketball and exercise? Check! Generous attic space for storage with easy access? Check! Plenty of privacy on a large lot that was once a Christmas tree farm, surrounded by lush lawn and mature trees? Check! Open areas for entertaining indoors and out as well as private spaces for quiet time alone? Check! Amazing home theatre? Check! Easy maintenance brick home and well water to irrigate the landscaping? Check! Check! Check!
What drew our eyes to this North Valley home for this issue’s theme was the freestanding basketball court/gym, which is 28.5-by-23 feet and about 22 feet tall — large enough to shoot hoops or do some serious workouts. The owners come from Indiana and they are all big basketball fans, so the gym got lots of use for hoops, plus their son used it for weight training and had a boxing bag installed. Their daughter was a competitive cheerleader before four years of varsity cheer in high school, so with tumbling mats in place, she had the perfect place to practice.
After a workout, you can take advantage of the adjacent full bath with shower before heading out to the backyard for a refreshing set of laps in the 36-by-16-foot pool or to soak in the hot tub. The pool area is completely enclosed for safety and additional privacy while still offering plenty of room for lounging and sunning. The backyard also features a large lawn, plus a complete outdoor kitchen and television in the covered patio area. There’s even a fenced area for the family dog. With a spacious lot that measures over an acre, there’s plenty of space for everyone to find their own spot, then gather for a game or al fresco meal.
What the inside has to offer
Heading back inside, the first floor of the home offers two living areas, a spectacular home theatre, gourmet kitchen, office, half bath, and master suite. Upstairs are three guest bedrooms — each of which has direct access to a bathroom — plus an entertainment room for a friendly game of pool. Fortunately for the future buyers, the pool table is conveying with the home, so unpacking could be interspersed with game time. The downstairs home theatre is just the place to relax with popcorn to see that latest streamed flick. The eight comfortable theatre seats and theatre equipment stay with the home, so movie night is also move-in ready!
There are so many exciting features in this house that make it the perfect place to stay home and not feel like you’re missing anything. Once we’re again able to gather with others, it has everything you need to entertain your family and friends.
Why the current owners love this home
The owner says, “It’s a nice blend between an open concept and some private areas. You have a couple of rooms, like the office and formal living area, that you can actually close off and enjoy some solitude. It’s great for when you have a couple of kids running around, but you can still have your sanity and find a quiet place. People want the open concept until they want some privacy and quiet. This home provides both!”
One of the home’s two comfortable living areas is just the spot to cozy up next to the fireplace while reading a good book, perhaps one selected from the room’s built-in bookcases. This room also features hardwood floors. There is a second fireplace in the home’s other living area, which has carpet and French doors allowing access to the outdoors.
Storage space isn’t lacking in this home, either. Finding an attic with easy access is no easy feat, but this home’s large attic area includes two entrances — no ladder required! One of the access points to the attic area is from the entertainment room, while the other is through the walk-in closet of a second-floor guest bedroom.
The roomy kitchen includes custom cabinets, a double oven, breakfast bar plus eating area, granite counters and island with gas stove, and wood floors. The stainless-steel appliances convey with the home.
Thoughtful touches abound in this custom home, from a surround-sound system and central vacuum to the feeling of privacy that pervades thanks to the large lot, lawn front and back, and a neighborhood inhabited by 40-foot pine trees. The home’s location in the North Valley off Westwind Drive inspires a feeling of being in the country rather than the desert, something these transplants from Indiana were looking for when they decided to move to Las Cruces.
The owners also wanted a home with minimal upkeep, so they decided to build with brick. The owner says it is not only warm and inviting, but also low maintenance. She says, “That’s the beauty of brick, you don’t have to worry about the stucco cracking and the paint peeling.” The wooden fascia on the house has just been repainted, leaving little to be done by the new owners.
Why the listing agents loves this home
Listing agent Peggy Stevenson thinks this property is a gem and says, “I love this home because it is so unique for our area — it offers genuine attic space which is seldom seen. It has a grand style with features to make everyone happy. The family members and guests have great space on the second floor. The owners’ suite is on the first floor plus the office and a spectacular movie room. The outdoor entertaining area is spacious and inviting. The separate gym was a great addition, and I could see it being converted to a fabulous casita if the new owner wasn’t needing a gym. Last, but certainly not least, is the lush green landscape maintained by its own irrigation well. There’s a little slice of heaven at 4669 Forest Park Drive.”
If a country home with all the amenities is on your list, this is one listing you’ll want to explore further. With your own basketball court, you’ll be all set for March Madness and to be fit in the new year.
