A Journey of Self Discovery Ignites Anastasia: The Musical - LasCruces.com

Getting out to see a first-rate touring theater production is a pleasure many have denied themselves for the past two uncertain years. How lucky are we, then, that one of Broadway’s shining stars is wending its way through the Southwest and roosting at The Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Center, Tuesday and Wednesday, March 1 & 2? It isn’t a dream! Anastasia: The Musical promises to give us opulent settings, dazzling costumes and a soaring score, just as we remember them!

From the Tony Award®-winning creators of the Broadway classic Ragtime, this dazzling show transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.

Based on the 1997 animated Don Bluth film of the same name, the musical adapts the legend of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, who could have escaped the execution of her family. This spectacular musical about discovering who you are and defining who you are meant to be, plays out via recognizable songs from the animated film, including Journey To The Past and Once Upon A December.

Featuring music and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, and a book by Terrence McNally, Anastasia: The Musical closed on Broadway March 31, 2019, after 808 regular and 34 preview performances, but not before racking up two 2017 Tony Award nominations and nine 2017 Drama Desk Award nominations, including Outstanding Musical.

Variety called Anastasia: The Musical “An emotionally rich and expertly crafted new musical,” while the Wall Street Journal crowed, “Anastasia is the real thing! Fantastical, intelligent, well-crafted and exhilarating!” TimeOut New York gave the musical four stars, calling it “a sweeping adventure,” while the Hollywood Reporter applauded its storyline as “a fairy tale whose princess chooses her own kind of prince.”

If you’re ready to get out of the house and immerse yourself in a colorful parade of fantastic dimensions and outstanding music, tickets for this family-friendly musical adventure are $20 – $45. To reserve tickets, visit the website, or call 915-231-1100.
